McCloskey unfazed by new opponent

Daniel Rasilla and Paul McCloskey

Paul McCloskey insists the late change of opponent for his European title shot on Friday has not affected the build-up to the biggest fight of his career.

The Dungiven man now faces Spaniard Daniel Rasilla after France's ex-world champion Souleymane M'baye pulled out of the Magherafelt bill.

"To be honest I don't care who I am fighting, I am ready and focused to win the European title," said McCloskey.

"Training has gone very well. I am in great shape and I am nice and relaxed."

McCloskey added:"Obviously it would have been nice to have fought and beaten someone of Souleymane M'baye's class.

"He's a former world champion and was the current European holder but he's pulled out and I'm now only focusing on Rasilla."

McCloskey has previous pedigree in terms of successfully taking on an opponent at short notice.

He clinched the British title by beating Colin Lynes last December after only being offered the fight five days earlier.

"It will be great to hopefully win the European title in front of my own fans"

"I have to admit I don't know a lot about him but I have trained very hard and I'm only focusing on winning the European title."

An impressive victory could boost the prospects of McCloskey being matched with WBA world champion Amir Khan in 2010.

"Obviously if I beat Rasilla and win the European title then I can look forward but not until then."

Despite the counter-attractions of Martin Rogan's Commonwealth title bout in Belfast and Mike Tyson's evening at the Waterfront Hall, tickets are said to have sold well for the show at Magherafelt's Meadowbank Sports Arena.

The 30-year-old also believes that the big home support can help spur him to produce an impressive display.

"It will be great to hopefully win the European title in front of my own fans."

The Magherafelt bill includes an eight-round bout between British featherweight champion Martin Lindsay and former Commonwealth title challenger Alfred Tetteh of Ghana.

Tetteh lost his Commonwealth title challenge against Esham Pickering six years ago.

The undercard also includes the contest between unbeaten prospect Carl Frampton who faces Hungarian Ignac Kassai.
